Thread: I'm in for a few days now

Default I'm in for a few days now

Got signed up on the 8th or something like that and my initial reaction was less than favourable. I have no interest in oval racing so that left me with 3 tracks and the Solstice. I tried out some solstice laps and it felt like I was driving my mother's car. Not really what I look for in a sim. I appreciate that it's accurate and realistic and about the racing, but I don't sim race so that I can drive in a car I could afford to buy right now.

Anyways, I gave it a bit more time and started to warm up to the challenge a little and just concentrated on clean runs so I could get my SR high enough to drive something that wasn't boring. It only took a couple days to get up to 4.0 and I immediately bought the Skip Barber car and the two extra tracks and that totally changed the game for me. I am really enjoying learning these things. They feel great and, more importantly, they feel fun. The VIR track is brand new to me and I am having a blast running it. Oak Tree rocks!

So, I've fallen right into this it seems. I noticed a post here about the Mazdas kicking lots of ass. I am tempted to buy it just to start playing with it now but since I can't actually use it online for another 11 weeks, I think I will leave it and just focus on mastering the skips for now.

What kind of times are you running at VIR?

I'm in the 2:14's on a really good lap, usually 2:15's. Here is my setup just in case you want to try it.

Yeah it does, Bob. I've been in a few sessions with you now in the skips and only just realized now that you're the Bob from Champion. Right on.

I can't believe the lap times some people are doing at VIR in the skips. When I was doing 2:19s I thought 2:15s were inhuman and now that I'm doing 2:16s or so, I see people doing 2:10s and am blown away. I think all the practice I can do this week will probably still get me maybe one more second. There's just no more speed to be found there for someone at my level.

    I love oak tree!

Edit: Oh, thanks Wes, I wrote my reply to Bob while you were writing your message. Yeah, as above, I am doing average 2:16s and 2:17s around VIR. My best lap so far was a 2:15.3 or something in qual, but I have been unable to reproduce that and I don't even honestly remember how I got it. I figured with only like a couple settings available on the Skips that setup was mostly irrelevant, but I will try yours out. I have never worked with setups yet in iRacing, so I will have to figure out where it goes still when I get home from work. Thanks for the help.

Damn it always surprises me how different two people can feel about a car setup. I was barely able to finish a lap once I figured out where to put your setup. I must be too heavy-footed or something because I lost the ass-end all over the place. I switched back to untouched default, which is all I have been driving, and got a couple 16s and a low 15. Thanks though!

Do the cars all get more setup options as you move up? Does Mazda have much more to tinker with than Skips?

Yes, the Mazda has more to tinker with. Aero adjustments, shocks, etc..

I need to spend some more time with iRacing. I have really enjoyed the races that I've run in thusfar, just need to make a point to enter into a few more of them. What's everyones ranking now, I am Class D - 3.5 or something like that.

I only got signed up last week, so I will have to wait 11 weeks or so (since it's just the start of a new season) before I can get my Class D license. I am a rookie for now, SR of 4.90 or so. I wish you could advance licenses early by reaching 4.99 or something so that I could try running the Mazdas, but it's for the better that I am forced to hang around here for a while because I am still 5 seconds slower than the aliens around VIR in the Skip Barber car. And the Barber cars are a ton of fun.

I am Class D 4.61 in Oval and Class D 4.46 in Road. I have really enjoyed it so far. I have not race much the last 2 weeks because I have been on vacation but I will be racing much more now.

I am able to do 2:13's in a race with this setup. Much more stable than the last one.
